Housesteads was a #Roman auxiliary fort on Hadrian's Wall, at Housesteads, Northumberland. It is dramatically positioned on the end of the mile-long crag of the Whin Sill over which the Wall runs, overlooking sparsely populated hills.

#Games played a vital role in the activities, especially those linked directly to religious festivals but these also included enactment of #myth.

From the fortress gates at York. The 9th Legion founded York. They were replaced by the 6th Legion in 120.

It is not known for sure what happened to the 9th, though there are traces of their presence in the Rhineland after 120.

Neath- the remains of a 1st C #Roman auxiliary fort known as Nidum stands on the west bank of the River Neath. Remains of 2 gateways can be seen, & the line of a rampart wall. Initial excavation showed a gateway for a 2nd century #fort built of stone. #RomanFortThursday #History #RomanBritain

Moridunum Demetarum

The #Roman site at #Carmarthen has been under discussion for a long time. It has been identified with the Moridunum of the Antonine Itinerary, and with Ptolemy's Moridounon.

Its position was ideal for a naval station.

A #Roman #ship was found in 1910 on the site of the County Hall, on the south bank of the River #Thames opposite #Westminster, #London. The ship had been abandoned at the edge of the River.
The construction of the ship is dated to about 300 AD.

The floor is thought to have been laid by mosaicists from Ilchester or Dorchester 4th century.

Originally set into a signet ring, this jasper intaglio was discovered at Aldborough #Roman Town, North #Yorkshire. It depicts a hare in a chariot, pulled by a cockerel. Intaglios have been found at Roman sites across #Britain, depicting people, animals and gods.

Metchley Fort was a #Roman fort in what is now #Birmingham.

It lies on the course of a Roman road, Icknield Street, and the University Birmingham in Edgbaston.

The fort was constructed soon after the Roman invasion of Britain in AD 43.

#Britain had at least four: #Colchester, #Gloucester #Lincoln and #York.

Each retired #soldier was allocated land within and outside the town.
