(to be clear - on rereading what I wrote - I was *not* a NwN dev. I was a moderator of their forum while it was at Interplay

(My take back then - 1999 - was a "Heritage" system where char "birth" included *embedding* the player in the world w/ unique parents, family, home, history... while death set chars back, but also bequeathed advantages only possible through gameplay

W/o delving into *mechanics* that would make permadeath not only viable (oxymoron!) but appealing;

I wrote a (long lost) essay on "Death needs meaning", a crucial for fostering enduring emotional entanglement in games, back during Neverwinter Nights development

I think it *can* & *should* be done

In comparison, I have seen the cutesy Christmas Lowes ad 3 times in the last 30 minutes...
