If it's used for writing a book and doing research on the internet using various sources mostly using a browser and an app to write a book? No problem to do that on an 8GB system. I still have here an 10+ year old MacBook Air with 4GB RAM, and even that still runs ok for some use cases.

I use a Mac mini M1 with 16GB now for many years without any performance problems. It's a joke reading '16 gig of RAM is not much at all'. It all depends on the use case!!! If the system is used for extensive video and graphics creation/editing/etc. 16GB for sure is not enough.
