It's funny how, when subway benches aren't full, people tend to sit exclusively at the far ends, given the chance

Is this a result of the pandemic, or are people just becoming more introverted these days?
A mostly empty subway car with passengers sitting only at the far ends of the benches, leaving the middle seats empty; one person in the foreground is wearing a dark jacket, jeans, and sneakers, sitting at the far end of a bench while looking at their phone, several other passengers can be seen scattered at the far ends of other benches further down the car
