Lucas Dillard was raised by a single mother in rural Appalachia, made it into a Ph.D. program in molecular biophysics at Johns Hopkins, and won a prestigious NIH fellowship for promising doctoral students. Trump’s executive order banning federally funded DEI programs killed the fellowship.
