On 25 November 2001, CIA officers David Tyson and Mike Spann were interrogating over 400 al-Qaeda fighters at Qala-i-Jangi when they rebelled, killing Mike. The uprising lasted six days and left over 500 dead. Only 80 al-Qaeda prisoners survived.

The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan may feel like a million years ago, but the events it set in motion and the forces it unleashed continue to shape our lives to this day. Sir Rodric’s Afgantsy is such a good read. I am, of course, hoping to get him on the pod.

There is a hamlet of a dozen of Hazara families in Helmand’s Garmsir district, where I sought refuge for 6 months after fleeing Hazarajat in July 99. As is the wonders of the internet, I found a video on YouTube showing the place. As if time has stood still for them.
