Australia's fire season for 2025 is pretty much over. Discussing this on Landline today. It's surprising to me how surprising this concept is. The narrative around fire in this county fails to engage with the vast and complex distribution of fire across our continent.

A brief but neat mention of Australia's peak fire season (October) on Land Line today. ABC pulled the fire spread video from this lnkd.in/gwbtsMBV site I set up to provide updated and dwnloadble animations of the fire season. Seeing stuff used and being useful is a great motivator to keep on.

..looking at the years' fire season for the Pilbara Ranger forum, and came across this just south of Roebourne. The 1st sat image from 27th Oct - 2nd the 30th, a beautiful example of how fire follows fuel and fuel follows water...but both 💧and 🔥need to flow through this country to keep it healthy.

2025 another big fire year in the NT. 25 millions ha burnt so far. 7.4 million of them burned over the past few weeks. Full reports available at nafi-bam-data-map.lkvl.net

I have been developing techniques for the automated assessment of fire events across Australia using NAFI (firenorth.org.au) data. These are the top 10 largest across Australia so far this year. 3 of them are > 1 million hectares (Terra-Fires, 100x mega fire). The year is not over.

New rain radar site from #bom doesn't work. Bizzare that this federal gov agency just broke one of their core services.

Dozens of lightning strike fires across Australia's Western Deserts ATM. Sat images from a couple of days ago. Beautiful, complex and, at times, scary.

Massive fires east of Tennant Creek at the moment. This S2 image captured yesterday, fascinating to see how this blaze is creating its own weather on a couple of its fronts. This 🔥 has moved over 100km over the last few days. This time of year, so hot and dry and lightning-rich storms are abundant

Dry lightning storms ripped through the Great Sandy, Gibson, and Tanami deserts a few days ago. Constrained by low fuel and previous burns, these desert fires are mostly small and really quite beautiful. Sentinel 2 imagery from Sunday.

750,000ha burnt across the NT over the last 5 days! This clip from yesterday - from the excellent Zoom Earth app. Mostly remote lightning strike fires. These fires can not be fought, these ignitions can't be controlled.
October 6, 2025 at 4:27 AM
A shit-ton of lightning strikes through remote Tanami and Great Sandy deserts resulting in a similarly shit-ton of ignitions. Will be keeping a close eye on them over the coming days.
October 4, 2025 at 5:25 AM
With potentially massive fires sparking up in the Central NT and WA deserts over the last few days I chucked this video together showing how to monitor their spread and asses their tradgectory using the North Australian Fire Information NAFI mobile app. Available on both Android and Apple

I had great fun yapping away about fire and complexity with Rick Hind yesterday on ABC radio Darwin. 1:21 in . A long sprawling chat, kept thinking we were done before getting another question. www.abc.net.au/listen/progr...

Absolutely massive fire racing through country S.E. of Broome at the moment. This (s2)image captured yesterday..visible are attempts to buffer burn ahead of the front. Latest data suggest it has jumped containment and is continuing to rip south-west. Follow it in real time on www.firenorth.org.au

NAFI burn animation site now updated to all fires through to September. View and download mp4 videos of fire spread from NAFI maps for 31 regions across Australia. A great teaching and fire behavior analysis tool. ACCESS THE SITE HERE:

Judbarra-Gregory NP, east Kimberley, NT, burn animation over August. 612,916ha 🔥 so far this year, most of that over the last couple of weeks. This 🔥is showing no sign of slowing down in this magnificent but very remote national park. 4th largest national Park in Australia. getting little attention
September 1, 2025 at 7:51 AM
Judbarra/Gregory National Park NT is toast. The fourth-largest national park in Australia (12,882km2) has a massive fire racing through right now. The northern half is already burnt, looks like it will sweep through the rest over the next few days. Sent2 image from yesterday - Fire front 70kms E-W.
