In 1867, Böcklin painted the above painting, inspired by Holbein’s Dead Christ (attached). Unlike Holbein’s stark realism, Böcklin portrayed Jesus in serene repose, with Magdalene mourning beside him. Blending Symbolism and classical tragedy, the painting was acquired by Basel’s Kunstmuseum in 1868.
