The speaker's movements through space/place/time, seemingly impaired by a neurological disorder called "visual snow," at first seem to go backwards, sifting through memories, both beautiful and painful, of growing up Black and queer—but only to reach toward a future of joy and freedom. Rogers writes "I am afraid of the dark because I am the dark," and yet "see[s] further than any person."
