Also having an executive who the electorate votes for individually (instead of the head of the party with the most seats automatically becoming president) is not great, nor is giving that person near-dictatorial powers.

Hmm. On the other hand, I always feel the “ashamed” response still demonstrates a kind of cathectic attachment to empire or a cringe response to the nation’s dirty laundry being re-examined— you know? It’s better than “proud”, obviously, but still not great.
