Brunel threaded the needle to bring his Great Western Railway from London into Bath in 1839. He squeezed it in between a new street, Hampton Row to the left (1820), and the Kennet & Avon Canal on the right (1810). But workers had to shunt the canal a dozen yards to the east to make it work.

Working on a guide to Bath. This arch on York Street was built in 1889, soon after the dig that uncovered the Roman bathing complex. It was designed by city architect Major Charles Davis, who oversaw that dig.
