I almost dropped it within the first 150 pages. It was a total slog, with the tone and setting being as far from sci-fi as it gets– it as if I was reading the wrong book. It picked up rapidly after that prologue, and its relevance became clear. It is now one of my favorite hard sci-fi stories.
