THE SHIELD When you pulled your blade From my weary back I shrugged it off Thinking I deserved that. When you held my freedom Under your thumb I acquiesced And allowed myself to go numb Truth be told You never had to cut me so deep I had already fallen on your sword I welcomed defeat And I waited for years For a hero to save me I wish I would have known All I had to do was retreat So when you left me here Broken and alone I reclaimed my soul again And built my heart a new home Fortified in the shadows It brought light again to my world In the struggle to survive My wound created a pearl Didn't you know That I am a shield I bear the armor you discarded Your sword I now wield You are but a ghost Here in the pages I've written A prop in the storyline Haunting the composition ©Paula Mull ©rockymtnpoet 5/19/2023

DANDELIONS Leering within the shadows, rejection and obscurity snicker at my endeavors to be seen. They see me, yet find comedy in the fact most do not. I do not wish for fame, or attention, but simply connection with others that share poetry and prose coursing within their veins, like I do. Words that have become heartbeats. Voices that speak out from beyond the chaos of life. Pouring life force from our bodies, hoping others will find eternal peace upon tasting. Getting their fix, their craving, sweet upon their parched lips. The pests jeer from behind doors I've locked after each hard lesson. I swat away the buzz of their vitriol and focus on my search for the beautiful ones. Those that take courage and lift it up like a freshly picked dandelion. Tiny little buds of color blooming through sidewalks. Bright as the sun, gentle as the moon, blowing the stars of seedlings upon winds of change. I hope they find you. You there… In the depths of your despair. Look up! See the breath of life and nurturing love within seeds parachuting throughout the sky. Do you know what that is? DREAM CHASER In the aftermath, I hope you look to the sky. Breathe in deeply the beauty that surrounds. You don't need a reason why. Feel the earth steady your aching feet. Paint your eyes with all of the colors upon the trees. Drink in the rain when the clouds open up, and embrace the rush of the wind. Feel the sun's warmth on your face and let peace in. Ride the waves. Kiss the moon. Give yourself grace even when you've fallen to your knees. Shattered hearts and minds will never be the same, but I can promise you they can feel relief. This life holds keys to beautiful and healing moments. We just simply have to be vigilant and grasp onto them. Allow ourselves atonement. Feed your soul with the elixir of love, time, and space. SUSPENDED WITHIN THE VOID Suspended within the void, i've nearly forgotten how all encompassing the darkness can be. Swaying upon a tether yet not knowing if there's a net underneath. Haunted by specters of past villains at the back of my mind. Hidden in corners and behind locked doors, I hear them whisper their wicked lies. Words stinging like a slap to the face, and I swear I can taste the blood. Hands to my lips and a gentle touch upon my cheek, but no bruises or cuts to speak of. These demons, they're fearsome, and I'm trying my best not to drown. The murky depths of what's already passed are not enough to ransom or tarnish my crown. I need no hand to hold, nor no flame to light my way home For I carry such a treasure within my heart, and though it is dark, I know I'm not truly alone. ©Paula Mull ©rockymtnpoet

WHEN THE WORLD FIGHTS A WAR When the world fights a war One is ignited within We try to battle each simultaneously And in the end, we never win We fall for the distractions And we watch the world burn We ignore the white flags That could offer us to adjourn Fear drives our purpose Instead of the strength we carry inside When the world fights a war We don't notice the internal divide The chasm grows to such depth And the fault line breaks us down We shouldn't be fighting each other We should be honoring the friends we've found When next you see the beginnings Of a struggle coming your way Remember, there are never clear victors Just survivors trying to see the next day ©Paula Mull ©rockymtnpoet

The gentle cooing of owls in the cool nip of the witching hour brought me peace. I had a habit of waking most nights to step outside for a moment and partake in the silence of my sleeping neighborhood. The sprinklers were on timers at the old school building across the street, despite the fact that rain was in the forecast. Not quite ready for the first of Autumn's frosts, the air held a promise that it wouldn't be long in coming. It hung on the streetlights like fog, drifting in the lyrical competitions of the nocturnal hunters. I slipped silently away, back to my bed and snoring husband, wishing I could stay just a while longer, there in the welcoming wisp of the season changing. ©Paula Mull ©rockymtnpoet

Contradictions Linger in the sunbeams of dusty cobwebbed windows. Let the orbs float with your inhibitions.
