These mourning doves aren't too bright. There's a heated birdbath with water just a few feet away, but they'd rather rest their tails on the ice in this one.

Does anyone know if birds actually use these shelter boxes for roosting or to get out of bad weather? I was given this one for Christmas. It's about 8 feet off the ground, and the hole is 1" square. I've seen chickadees, goldfinches, tufted titmice, nuthatches, and house finches at my feeders.
