Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona daoibh… Part of my journey to the Murphy side of the family tree in County Kilkenny just outside of Waterford.

My 4th great-grand-father Patrick Murphy married Catherine Ivery in 1791, and they would go on to have 4 children baptized in the same parish in Slieverue.

“Fhalla na cathrach mean aoisigh”- the Irish for medieval city wall. And the walls do talk if you are an archaeologist. Waterford, also the “birthplace”of the Irish flag?? Or is this mythology? 🤔 🇮🇪

Today - the news that Haskell Indian Nations University here in Kansas has been impacted by Trump’s cuts. Isn’t this a treaty violation? Tonight - I am struck by Joy Harjo’s poem in a new way … “by the authority of a piece of paper”

It’s that time of year again, where normalized synchronized racism on our Sunday’s takes to the global stage for another Super Bowl. I encourage you to read this statement and reflect: notinourhonor.com/2025/02/08/s...

Zoom’d with 75 4th graders with Olmstead Falls City Schools about archaeology & the Hopewell Culture! Students were attentive and asked really great insightful questions. It's opportunities like this during my sabbatical that I'm so very much enjoying!

Next Week!! Jan 29 is “Kansas Day” marking statehood in 1861. Thus, it’s a good day to spend in education with Native scholars.
This is a statewide effort to learn how to improve teaching and learning about, for, and with Native Nations. Check out the program!

I watched the film Conclave last night and was left continuing to contemplate Power. So today I’m picking up where I left off in “The Best Catholics in the World” by Derek Scally. Wondering what folks in Ireland make of this book 🤔 @ravenbooks.bsky.social. #booksky

Hello from Topeka, Kansas, where the Blizzard of Oz has brought us 14 in / 35.5 cm of snow in a day. Thundersnow shook the house this morning. All highways are shutdown; everything is closed through Monday. Largest snowstorm in 32 years.

Finished “Wandering Stars” today by Tommy Orange. It’s really striking to me the depth of knowledge of his writing - historic to modern trauma, illness, addiction, family dynamics, impacts of colonialism…
