I’ve taught Antigone to 6th graders and they engaged. Because “What if my brother died and they wouldn’t bury him because of something he did?” is relatable and leads to the bigger question “What if someone I love is wrong?” Arguably no more important question right now.

Because art, including literature, is about reaching a better shared understanding of the human experience. Grief, love, greed, jealousy, triumph, discovery. Being human is hard and complicated. Literature is the most practical course we teach.
