Another from Lamplighter’s Marsh. The marsh itself is dominated by sea-couch grass (Elymus arthericus) along with a patch of common reeds. I heard and spotted a reed warbler too but couldn’t snap a shot :/

Expectation vs reality…

Think I may have missed them. Probably not the best time to visit in 30 degrees C weather either, but damn… will they make it through these droughts?

Lathyrus nissolia, the grass vetchling. Almost indistinguishable from a grass until it flowers, due to its lack of true leaves, leaflets or tendrils. The leaf stalk is flattened out and resembles a leaf of grass, with stipules at the base.

Found an abundance of common spotted orchid (Dactylorhiza fuchsii) toward the top of Lower Woods the other day. #wild #orchid #woodland

A pretty little wood anemone (Anemonoides nemorosa) I saw in Lower Woods yesterday. The foliage is quite different to the others I saw, as it is dark greenish-purple. These are ancient woodland indicators.

Winter offers a challenge to identify plants when their flowers are but a distant memory.

Spotted this tiny crinoid column by the stream in Lower Woods recently. These ‘living fossils’ are relatives of sea cucumbers & urchins, despite looking like a plant. #FossilFriday

A pollarded oak behind my aptly named local pub ‘The Royal Oak’. Pollarding is a practice that involves removing the top branches of trees to encourage new growth, often resulting in a very wide and short tree (it also extends their life, this is an old fella). Short King! #ThickTrunkTuesday

What looks like a meadow puffball (Lycoperdon pratense) but I swear it’s too big. Any ideas? #FungiFriends

Was coppicing hazel and found a bit constricted by honeysuckle (hence the shape). Will carve into a staff 😎 #wizard #forest (plus bonus porcelain mushroom, very sticky)

Happy #NationalMushroomDay - Daldinia concentrica, potentially the UK’s most common fungus, seen here on an ash dieback victim. These feel, look and act like coal. A frozen Neolithic man was found to have a pouch of these, essentially used for carrying a fire with you. #FungiFriends #foraging
