I wasn’t justifying it, I’m saying what probably happened. Obviously they should have used a better tool, but didn’t. It was amateurish, but local news often is I’m afraid.

This is true, and the news offices in Salford or London would have used the dedicated tool… I suspect this was a local journo using his laptop and a free on line tool.

Sure, but in reality the BBC’s local news has been slashed. Not nearly as many reporters as they had a decade ago.

Why not do both? Confirming the picture is fake takes seconds, driving to the bridge could take hours - assuming you can get access to it when you get there.
