This whole situation is weird and there's no"fair" solution. But why does Crew deserve the opportunity over LAFC (runner up to Léon) and Club America (#1 ranked team in the region)?
Also Fifa is calling all the shots. Concacaf and MLS have no say.

Would the Linux community accept a root kit for gaming? I only ask that because I think game studios like EA, riot, etc. will only accept that much power over their games (as long as they're mega popular)

I wouldn't put it past M$ to do the EEE model and try to get a large enough user base then do a bait and switch down the line to lock it down. Pretty much I do not trust Miocrosoft. Pressure should be on Valve to offer better anti-cheat.

Or at the very best it will feel like using an Amazon Fire device where it's ultra opinionated for using Microsoft services.

Potential customers are under the impression it will be Windows, just with an xbox UI, just put Steam on it and go.
Half of me thinks M$ will shoot themselves in the foot here, it will be Like Windows S Mode, only apps from Microsoft Store can be installed/executed.

If they just made a Windows handheld, with a gamepad/living room friendly ui, users would be happy, but M$ would feel like they are leaving money on the table for Valve to snatch. I would read whatever agreements carefully see how they could lock it down, lock out Steam, in the future

Honestly, Microsoft will probably shoot themselves in the foot.
Make it locked down like "Windows S Mode"
Make the Microsoft Store the source for all apps.
At best it would be like running an Amazon Device where M$ is first party everything, trying to make it a Steam experience will feel off
