I do stuff with @therecordclub.bsky.social and on BCB Radio.

Knee deep in the hoopla.

Saltaire / Shipley / Bradford.
40 years old this week (I’d say today but that was a Friday and records were released on a Monday in the UK in 1985). ABC’s How To Be A Zillionaire. It’s a pop masterpiece and still sounds ruddy ace.

Between you and me it’s the 40th anniversary of a very special record in just over a week’s time…

It was 40 years ago today… I was sat in the back of a Vauxhall Cavalier, returning from the family holiday in Devon listening to Live Aid on the radio. My lovingly preserved copy of Ver Hits now my trusty guide as I work my way through the BBC2 repeat…

A few days off & a pile of books to enjoy. First off & finished already is @wadeywade.bsky.social 1984 The Year When Pop Went Queer. An engaging cultural history lesson showing how pop pushed back against 1980s prejudice & homophobia. With a banging playlist to boot. Highly recommended.

“That record went gold today”
If looks could kill. Bit awkward 😬

I had a great time @fiveriserecords.bsky.social yesterday. Aidy always puts on a very good Record Store Day. Along with some of my @therecordclub.bsky.social pals I had a slot to play some tunes in the shop and came away having bought far more than I planned. A very good day all round.

The mighty Cud band played Bradford for the first time in 34 years last night and I was there. A hugely entertaining affair with top support from railway-loving punks Indignation Meeting. Their Napalm Death cover was splendid

First time at Bradford City since December. Half expected my seat to have been sold. 22,000 expected today. I’m maybe a bit early but I have my veggie pie to keep me occupied.

Still baffled how Olive’s wonderful You’re Not Alone absolutely stiffed when it was first released despite loads of R1 airplay at the time. What made it such a hit when it was rereleased a year later? Pop, eh! #totp

Oh boy. Sad news about David Lynch. A true original. And what a legacy.

Really enjoyed my first spin this morning of @flashcassette.bsky.social album Night Waves. Giddy, funky electro pop goodness. Perfect soundtrack to a game of Street Fighter 2 Turbo or Sensible Soccer on the Sega Megadrive or a trip to the drive thru McDonalds in your Escort XR3i

No cameras were allowed during the performance so err… here’s the before and after of an evening with Martin Fry in Ilkley. Which was excellent.👍

Pleased as punch when I bought my Story of Star Wars record recently, I posted this a while ago on Facebook and someone replied “Ah, the famous cigarette butt photo”. Yep, there was no such thing as Keep Tunisia/Tatooine Tidy in 1970s.

Making the most of Pictureville at National Science & Media Museum reopening. I’ve seen 5 belters in 6 weeks. Always better on the big screen.

The first LP you bought with your own money.

My other 2 record purchases during my trip to Exeter. Can’t wait to hear the voice of Roscoe Lee Browne again after 46 years. Raiders was a new one on me and in absolute mint condition.

There’s a nasty smell at the other place so I’m checking in here and Threads (@robprior) for a while. Anyway, I bought some records today…
