Learning is not something one can consume. It is something one has to work on/for. And the university is there to help and to certify.

It’s mind numbing to say the least! When I travel/stay somewhere for the EU they give me a decent per diem. But my uni wants me to spend 4 working hours to submit receipts from a 5-day trip …

Very good

Yes, some of those books (and dozens of articles) I wrote, so bring it on!

Did you say ‘taste’ there Sarah? Moo ha ha ha

Molto bene!

In the Netherlands it’s not (yet) quite as bad, but academia worldwide has become founded on abusing people’s honest drive and passion big time

Happy birthday, Jamie

Welcome to the club, hope you get well soon!

This is what happens when universities are expected to act as business companies rather than as places for research and learning
September 22, 2025 at 7:47 AM
Now that’s the way to do it!
September 22, 2025 at 7:38 AM
Despite everything that’s going on, happy birthday Sarah!

Yes I’ll have some New Dawn Fades with that please, thank you very much

Absolutely

Funny, there were actually more guitars on Up than I had remembered. And more good songs too! The Apologist for example
September 2, 2025 at 9:48 PM
For all its lack of guitars, Up is a pretty good album actually. Your post made me play it again, and Lotus for instance is great. More down the line (Walk Unafraid!)

Same! Anything up to New Adventures in Hifi is virtually flawless, but every record since has some great songs. Saw them without knowing them at a festival in 1985 (12.30 pm I think), got Fables of the Reconstruction for my next birthday, and been hooked ever since. Extra kudos for quitting on time

Problem is, they have so many!
