PhD Chemist/Physicist/Materials Scientist near Chicago.
Researching new ways to measure scents, to better understand the cognition of taste and smell, find pollutants and toxics, measure quality of air and foods and add olfaction to robotic systems.
I actually said "oof" out loud. This seems like a whiff at the level of logic, before even getting to the definition of science.

Hmm...idk. It's like associative grouping, but that is more descriptive than an operative thing.

This is cool, never knew it was a thing. If this was chemistry, it would be an exchange reaction 😆.

Also, he relentlessly advocated for science AND rationality. Anyway, the linked essay is good and short, please read it!

Note for Musk: it was Materials Science, admitted but never enrolled.

A smart guy I knew used one of those as a sleeve for his macbook to deter theft.

Thanks for identifying it. Why did it fail?

I like the color one better. He seems like a colorful person, and it highlights his personality.

This has been the strangest shutdown. A lot of civil servants in what would normally be non-essential roles seem to still be working (or allowed to work w/o pay). Even got a proposal to review from a PM the other day. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Weaponized ignorance is vile.

Thank you! Interesting paper, but disappointing that the trend reverts so strongly with age.

Saw him speak at Brookhaven in the early 90s. Record scratch moment when he started showing certain slides, and it dawned on me that he was talking about eugenics. He made it explicit within minutes and the temperature in the crowd dropped dramatically.

Yep, I was referring to scientists as well. What you say makes sense. Techs are often in demand and can shift to similar work, and engineers are always in demand, but have a harsh expiration date as they get older (not fair or legal, but real).

What you say here is broadly true. NASA on the CV might get more responses than say USGS, but it won't help get the job unless you can solve THE problems the hiring firm needs you to solve, very soon. It's a challenging job market in the US and will be for a long time.

Apparently they changed the formulation in 2005, I never realized. Saran wrap is not made from saran (PVDC) anymore!

“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant ... through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”
