Thank you to @3lobedmag.com for publishing my academia-horror story about epistemological decay, and sandwiches.

I use shellac to finish wood furniture I make. Shellac is my favorite finish because it's easy to apply, dries in 15 minutes, and is all natural and food safe.

This is the lac bug. It leaves goop on tree branches, which humans collect, boil, then stretch out into thin sheets which dry. The resulting flakes can then be melted in 190 proof alcohol to create shellac.

Shellac is used as beautiful finish for wood, and also as coatings for pills & candy.

Today is for chamfering the table top

I underestimated how much my muscle memory wanted to make this a 45° chamfer (instead of 60°), so it took some adjustment to get the angle right. At some point I really should make a chamfering plane to help with this!

I make furniture with hand tools! I have a roubo-style workbench and a mix of vintage and new hand tools.

@loveandcrossbones.org also does some really cool woodworking with hand tools, including making guitars.

The doweling jig was crucial for assembling this table top, the largest glue up I've ever done.

The boards were 1-1/8" thick cherry, 76"+ long. Some of them had a slight bow, end to end, so I used the dowels to force them into alignment during glue up, which will save me lots of time flattening

I think m&m's are a type of arthropod, so the shellac coating (which is derived from sticky goop produced by the wonderful lac bug) on them is their exoskeleton

YEA! This thread gets it!

That was the premise of my novella. We got electro-millipedes, space lampreys, cyber-catboys, and what one reader described as "the most tender and emotional post-human vore-inflation scene they've ever read."

Come hear me read from something ✨tragic✨ next week!

Feral drones, doomed love, and experimental epistolary nonsense! Also featuring my woodworking workshop in the background.

After months of work, I finally finished this desk!

This is my 2nd time using drawbored mortise-and-tenons.

That is a really nice looking fillester plane!

I have a similar one, and it's a joy to use. Amazing how fast it is at making repeatable rabbets.

Though I sometimes have trouble with the mouth getting clogged when using it cross-grain.

I also recently got to eat Rush Creek Reserve from Uplands Cheese, and omg it was probably the most decadent thing I've had in a long time. Thank goodness I was able to share it with a bunch of friends, since it is a devour in 1 sitting type of deal.
