When he transforms into gun mode, he can discard any superfluous components like motors and struts into subspace, and exchange them for capacitors and amplifiers that turn his teeny little handheld pistol into a weapon of mass destruction.

It lets him dedicate every inch of his circuitry to making things explode, versus a tank mode which requires an engine and several motors and struts, all of which increase weight and drag without giving any meaningful destructive tradeoff.

What better way to declare such surety that his followers will carry out his orders to the letter, than taking an alt mode that renders him helpless and reliant? It's the alt mode of a *power bottom.*
