Portuguese Halloween Fish. Handed out to trick-or-treaters. When children finish eating one, they get to spread the bones in their parents’ bed as a memento mori. It’s a deeply religious country.

Ever since we brought home the dragon palm, it’s been moving around the room when we’re not looking in order to get the creepiest, most Hitchcockian shadows on whatever door or wall it can, and now we’re afraid to throw it out because it’s gotten all the other plants on its side.

Why would I not want to live in a city?

Because it’s the year 2025, the USA is run by a strongman, and truth is no longer verifiable?

You know, I don’t know how the bar got set so low for these birds, but not _every_ blue heron is automatically “great.” This one, for instance, is maybe a 7, tops.

Honoring Heloísa Teixera (Buarque de Hollanda), famous Brazilian writer, critic, chair of Brazilian Academy of Letters, who died last month, 85. And could also sing a mean bossa nova. Still, unmentioned on the front of an album cover with Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto. Because . . . oh, who could say?

I don’t know who the photo editor is at Radio Television Portugal, but she’s a genius at finding the perfect image.
