I’ve had more than one Writer In The Classroom who said if everything they wrote was published, they would look like a fraud. One of them said that only about 10 percent of what they wrote was publishable. And it made them successful. I mention that first because photography is like that, too.

The truth is, when you are working with at-risk students of any type, they have given up trying before they ever arrived in your class. In their experience, the more work they submitted, the worse their grade became because they were learning something new. Here's what to do next.

Write a complete story in 55 words or less. That's what I tell writers who are just learning how to write a narrative. All it needs is a setting, character or characters, conflict, and a resolution.
