Surely this is entirely too on the nose to pass for witty; nonetheless, I find it quite difficult to imagine a more perfect compliment to Marx’s critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Law than Conflict’s album There Must be Another Way.

Last Sunday, I went on a tour of Rideau Hall. Every room that was open to the public was quite beautiful. Here is a photo of the Pauline Vanier room—i.e., the Canadiana room.

In advance of King Charles III giving the throne speech on 2025-05-27, here are a few photos from Rideau Hall (which is the official residence of the Governor General). The photos are of the ballroom, the front facade, the entrance, the tent room.

Last night I saw Romero’s Season of the Witch (1972). What a lovely, strange, 2nd-wave feminist film!

Carney owned Trump. The American shit gibbon was too oblivious to know what was going on.

Today, I had a lovely bike ride around Ottawa.

Here are a few photos from the ride: the National War Memorial, ‘The boat and the world of animals’, the National Gallery of Canada.

Yesterday, I purchased and assembled a new barbecue.

The barbecue didn’t fall apart over the course of the night.

Today, I am preparing beer can chicken for supper.

In his victory speech, Mark Carney observes that we

‘become just by doing just acts, temperate from doing temperate acts, brave by doing brave acts’.

This sentiment figures prominently in Value(s) (2021). It is so nice that Canada now has a PM that casually quotes Aristotle.

April 28, 2025.

On this day, Canadians came together to reject the sad passions expressed by our southern neighbours.

We collectively specified that Canada is no place for ressentiment; here, we affirm our better angels.

Today, the good in all Canadians won.

Today, Canada won.

Here are a few photos from today’s bike ride (which also was the 1st ride of the year).

After all the repugnant rhetoric coming from down south, Parliament Hill felt all the more special.

I’m watching the first episode of the most recent season of The Handmaid’s Tale.

The two main characters are refugees from America on a train bound for the promise of hope and freedom in Canada.

It strikes me that this fiction is profoundly close to our lived reality.

If these polling numbers —of 04-02-2025—are adequate representations of the voter intentions and the members of the electorate actually cast their ballots, we are heading for an electoral blowout of historic proportions.

This is just the beginning of our ‘disproportionate response’. To be clear, this is a bench clearing brawl.

I just finished reading Malm’s short book. It is quite good, though the main thesis—that settler-colonialism ideology is implicated with fossil fuel consumption and this is illustrated in the genocide of Palestine—could perhaps be better developed.
