All being well, two months later the nest hatches and baby turtles run the gauntlet of predatory crabs and birds to make their way back to the ocean. Twenty years later they might return to Aride to nest themselves.

Female turtles are very susceptible to disturbance as they emerge but once they’ve excavated their nest and started to lay they go into a trance and can be measured, tagged and the number of eggs laid are counted.
