phylogenetics, molecular evolution, some genomes, kids, dogs, and eclectic hobbies none of which I am much good at but I think for me that's the point
ANU website is SUPER super helpful. Always good to have FAQs so we know what they want us to do...

Everything's going great at #ourANU !

The lack of communication is pretty staggering. Like folks finding out from rumours(?) on Reddit that their area and possibly their own job might be getting cut.

This is 100% unnecessary if things are run competently.

With a massive budget deficit, and in the middle of huge layoffs, good to see ANU investing in cleaning up some minor protest graffiti before most people get to work. #ourANU

Resonates. On one particular summer beach trip at home, I ended up standing in a car park in the rain, alone except for the two friends I'd driven with, drinking hot Bovril out of a styrofoam cup.

The cup wasn't even branded and cool like this one. Just plain white. The Bovril *was* beefy though.

The caption of this image seems like a stretch.

A quick walk in the reserve to look for christmas beetles with the kids. No luck, but lots of cool things to see.

A question (maybe for @confuzzledpigeon.bsky.social or @americanbeetles.bsky.social): do you think the mating leafhoppers *meant* to line up their little stripe with the leaf vein?

Just finished building a tree house of which I am inordinately proud. If I’d had any idea how intricate shingles are I’d never have started. Ignorance for the win.

I made a clunky little graph layout thing (with thanks to ChatGPT) that helps a fair bit with coming up with phrases.

Post a scene from a movie you’ve seen more than 10 times

10 points to anyone who can identify this without looking at the alt-text.

For phylo nerds interested in concordance and discordance...

Here's a tutorial that helps you calculate gene, site, and quartet concordance vectors for any branch on your tree.

Oh wow. Worse than I thought too.

Imagine the errors creeping into code through over reliance on this stuff.

If you tick the boxes next to each, you should be able to merge them. You get to choose the 'best' representation, and the citations are summed.

Coincidentally I'd just become enraged when I noticed that my own institution now has homepages for every researcher that puts 'Research Output' front and centre, measured by *whatever the fuck is easy to count* (i.e. papers and citations).

Carrying an interesting lurgy. RATs say not COVID or flu, so maybe an RSV of some sort?

Last night's temperature spike was a big one. ~40C does not feel nice, but I entertain myself through the pain by recording as much data as I can bear.

GPT4 #phylogenetics picture competition, please RT (what is the equivalent of RT on here?)

My entry: Draw a phylogenetic tree of the phyla of metazoa... The pictures of the phyla should be in the style of detailed line drawings. Each phylum must be labelled with the latin name of that phylum.
