Hey bug (or #isopod) people, WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THE ROLLIE POLIES?

Is this just a bumper year for bugs or is this the Rollie Pollie #rapture?

Take a break. Make a cup of tea. Go for a walk. Listen to music. Doodle. Paint. Cook. Snack. Lie on the floor. Sit on a rock. Sit in the sun. 15 minutes. Anytime now.

My cat has the emotional and physical constitution of a frail victorian orphan set to inherit a creaky manor in the Yorkshire moors. Is he depressed and anxious? Yes. Is he living in peak luxury and privilege? Also, yes.

What book do you think Willa (10) would like?

Me: Hmmm… what was the last book she really loved?

"Is it dead?” a kid asks…

I’ve heard this question many times from kids on field trips to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History where it was my task to answer them.

Today, this book, illustrated by @mattschu.bsky.social and published by Little Bee, hopes to honor their question honestly.

I'm not ignoring world events so much as I'm hoping courage, friendship, and cooperation will win the day and inspire the hearts of young readers. They need it! They need us!💙

Happy pub day to me & Paul Kellam & many thanks to @brittanyjthurman.bsky.social for the beautiful embroidered book cover!💙

At a solstice party I was asked: have you been writing? I said yes, then clarified. I have 3 books coming out next year, but all that work is done and I have been actively "not writing" for about four weeks. Creative rest is writing too, my friends. Not writing is #writing. Inspiration will come. 🌟

How did you all celebrate? This was my pumpkin pie and mountain of mashed potatoes. Predictably, my 13yo had more of an appetite for adventure than I did. 😳

I’m stunned with gratitude for the resilience, strength, and acceptance of the earth. She’s my 🪨.

I know my book people, but where are my #bird people? And... can any of you identify this feather I found today?

Moments of solace and calm this week:

burning beeswax
meditation
walking fast
walking slow
the stare of a coyote
a butterfly's stillness
meadowlarks in grass
an upside down crow
cardamom under my pillow
water
tea
cutting fruit
a sister
swaying hugs
my shadow next to his
the mountain lion is back

Taking a break from writing to research bioluminescent jellyfish makes me sure my job is the BEST.

Then (somehow) I ended up on a side quest to find out if pink beetles exist and now I'm wonderfully overwhelmed by how many species of beetles there are.

I'll never have time to meet them all.

Yesterday I hiked down to Kirby cove and dunked myself in the ocean spontaneously in (some of) my clothes. It wasn’t writing, but it was a clarifying experience that will only help my writing.

The ocean always accepts us. It touches every shore. #ocean
