Back a few years ago, if you wanted "World News" from the source, Short-Wave Radio was your option... There was a lot to listen to -in English, and many other languages. The latest Popular Electronics magazine kept you informed as to when & where to tune in. You could build your radio too.

Around 90 years ago (1935) not everyone had the modern life yet - especially on farms: electrification had not completely reached beyond urban areas for folks on "the farm." Over 85% of farms apparently didn't have any electricity yet.

On December 1st, 1924, the VLF transmitter, with call sign “SAQ” at Grimeton Radio Station, was put into commercial operation... one hundred years later, SAQ commemorated this event with one transmission over the antenna on VLF 17.2 kHz CW.
