PLANNING FOR REAL: BRINGING YOUR WHOLE SELF TO THE FIELD An APSA Short Course Discussions on Navigating: • The body • Academic Responsibilities • Ethics • Practical Concerns • Gatekeepers • Community • Family • And much more Most fieldwork advice is very general in nature, proffered for supposedly neutral and unmarked researchers. This approach underestimates the variability of researchers’ bodies and positionalities across the span and dimensions of fieldwork including preparing, active field time, and reception. These varied bodies and positionalities are not ancillary to the planning and doing of fieldwork but influence every aspect of it. We take up these concerns in this interactive workshop session, sharing our experiences, insights and expertise, and creating space for participants to integrate their whole selves into planning and adapting field work. All are invited to engage with Thuto Thipe’s work on black people’s landownership in mid-twentieth century Johannesburg, a time when the city was designed and legislated for white people’s exclusive permanent residence. Thipe is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at the University of Chicago. Her work focuses on the role of land and fixed property in the production and articulation race, gender, and class in 19th and 20th century South Africa.

Planning for Real: Bringing Your Whole Self to the Field, an interactive #APSA2024 QMMR short course, will address the varied positionality of researchers and their relation to the field. We focus on navigating the how of comparative fieldwork in the bodies we're in, with all that we may carry.
