My favorite bookstore in San Francisco. It always feels magical to go inside there and look around.

Probably the only mural ever painted by Frida Kahlo, as seen on the kitchen walls of her family's red house, c. 1938. "El mesón de los gorriones" (Sparrow's Inn). The home is now Museo Casa Kahlo.

Echo and Narcissus by John William Waterhouse, 1903, is the story of a man in love with himself and where the woman infatuated with him can repeat only the last three words he says. Oddly, that's what is happening today in America with all those women who drank the Kool-Aid.

I love a beautiful piebald horse and often include one in my stories. This is an 1877 watercolor painting of a piebald horse by Isabella Hunter, Scottish Borders.

When my cats aren't happy, I'm not happy. Not because I care about their mood, but because I know they're just sitting there thinking up ways to get even. ~ Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822)

"My idea of good company … is the company of clever, well-informed people, who have a great deal of conversation; that is what I call good company." –Jane Austen’s Persuasion

Hey Bluesky, I hope the meaningful conversation continues here.

John Keats died this day, February 23, 1821, age 25.

In the long vista of the years to roll,
Let me not see my country's honor fade;
Oh! let me see our land retain its soul!
Her pride in Freedom, and not Freedom's shade.

"To Hope" (1815)

I've donated again to the Pasadena Humane Society. This grey cat was severely burned during the Eaton Fire and is still slowly recovering in ICU. Turns out that her name is Skinny Minnie and her family has been found. Learn from animals: Resilience, Resistance, Survivor, Healing.

Deep Third - an actual POV? This insightful article (updated Feb. 2025) gives an excellent example of deep third's roots -- the free indirect discourse used by Jane Austen and others.

The rose is red, the violet's blue,
The honey's sweet, and so are you.
Thou are my love and I am thine;
I drew thee to my Valentine:
The lot was cast and then I drew,
And Fortune said it shou'd be you.

Gammer Gurton’s Garland, 1784

“I do not know what is the matter with me to-day, but I cannot write quietly; I am always wandering away into some exclamation or other. Fortunately I have nothing very particular to say.” Jane Austen

I bet she had a lot to say about being a female writer.

I watched Hard Truths, a Mike Leigh film. That was brutal, more brutal than The Brutalist. Pansy is the unhappiest person alive, snapping & snarling at everyone. Tormented by her past, she torments her family & others. A very unlikable character. And yet, you hope she can pull through.

I did two hours of research last night, just to write one sentence. I got up early this morning (exactly 5am!) and made more progress on my historical romantasy, where the MMC is a socially awkward young gentleman.

Horse refugees from Malibu stabled at Pierce College in the San Fernando Valley. The horses were agitated and scared. Hopefully, they and their owners found some peace of mind. The stables can accommodate up to 200 horses.
