I love both the book and the movie! So good, and perfect for the age it's aimed at.

If they haven't read one recently, I offer to help them find one to try that might help them understand what the deal is, even if they don't end up a fan. Admitted that kind of comics advisory is my jam, but it can help people get it if they find one that works for them as a consumer of stories.

All that being said, I agree that while it's upsetting I'm sure you can work toward a middle. I ask people how long it's been since they're read a long form comic, on a subject that interests them, to get a sense of where they're coming from.

On comics: they require different types of literacy, but exercise your comprehension in ways that are an alternative to prose. I often whip out "comics include vocabulary that's one grade level higher than a prose novel aimed at the same range". They use fewer, but more specific & complex, words.

My go to for discussions like this are: reading prose/reading a comic/listening to an audiobook are all different, but not better or worse than the other. I frequently re-read a book I read in print by listening to it, and I find it slowed me down/made me notice different things.

I need to get a smaller box to try on my larger one to see what she attempts.
