Enjoyed @steverichards.bsky.social & @iaindale.bsky.social at #Bridport #BridLit yesterday. Always good to hear nuance and curiosity in politics, not just opinion. Really interesting on Thatcher and Blair similarities/differences and how we are still living with their influence.

Israel gets away with it. Badenoch thinks if you ignore climate breakdown it will go away. Far right say *Starmer* is inciting violence. People think it ok to be horrible about an MP’s baby. And that’s before 10am. I’m off for a walk, on which I will remind myself it’s not me that’s mad…?

It’s not ‘The Orkneys’; it’s ’Orkney’. A place in its own right, not just a vague region. Otherwise a great discussion!

Amid the frankly awful news, our garden has provided an oasis of calm and beauty this year, largely thanks to the skilled efforts of our Ukrainian guest.

Finally made it up @nationaltrust.org.uk The Hardy Monument after 7 years living here, en route by bike to Hive Beach. Never been open when I’ve passed before. Stunning view. Thank you NT volunteers!
No, not that that Hardy, the first one! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardy_M...

If you’re on leave and staying away from home, it’s a HOLIDAY, *not* a staycation.
England, Wales and Scotland offer fabulous places to visit. My personal favourites are #Orkney and #Pembrokeshire. No need to fly overseas and you can even leave the car at home.

Good to see #Dorchester #CivicSociety at the Town Council’s Open Event this lunchtime @dorchesterarts.bsky.social, and to see the strong beneficial partnerships built. Two-hatting with @dorchestertransport.org.uk

Enjoying re-reading #TheSubtleKnife (Philip Pullman) & reminded about shock of a human without their daemon. Similar now to one without their phone. Sat in St John’s Garden; everyone on phones. I know I am now too, but enjoyed 10 minutes just sitting first, presumably looking very suspect.

I was ‘quite amused’ when our guide pointed out that the Queen Victoria statue is atop a large underground public lavatory, bringing a different slant to the phrase ‘being on the throne’.

Pleased to have been part of @yhacs.bsky.social quarterly get together in #Hull this weekend. Fascinating historical tour this morning, then a well-attended meeting at the home of William Wilberforce. ‘England owes to him the reformation of manners; the world owes him the abolition of slavery.

Quite enjoying my first experience of #HullTrains, with the exception of the apparent inability of #train designers to line up windows with seats. The Victorians managed it!

Lovely to have a violinist friend round for me to accompany on piano, ranging from Handel to McCartney and The Corrs. I’ve don’t regret leaving the beliefs and judgementalism of church behind, but do miss the music and ‘camaraderie’.

Enjoyed visiting Nothe Fort run by #Weymouth Civic Society this afternoon with chair James Farquharson. They passed the 100,000 visitor mark in 2024. Great example of a civic society protecting heritage, engaging community and making it pay. Much to learn. #MakingPlacesGreatTogether

‘Have I missed the connection to Arnside’? ‘Yes, but fear not, there is a friendly railway pub over there.’
I can vouch for the friendliness, and recommend the Lancaster stout. A personal celebration I’ll post about next week…

Hadn’t expected to have to ring 999 when the crossing gates jammed on red at Bare Lane station! Impatient idiots risking everything by driving across on red. Thankfully now resolved.
