Researching the Corunna campaign. Returned to my fave source used for my Vimeiro book: Brig Gen Anstruther's journal. Great stuff, but often impossible to read. Can anyone decipher the underlined word? Rest of sentence in thread.

With a name like mine it's not often you come across it when researching. This from a court martial of an assistant surgeon of the 1st Foot.

Can anyone help with the transcription of the underlined section? What I have so far in the thread below.

I really enjoyed Bluestockings by Susannah Gibson. A really well written and researched book shedding much needed light on a neglected subject. The chapter on motherhood and child birth is a harrowing read though.

Thanks Alex. I think the first letter might be t and it might be an accent over the e. The middle letter that looks like p might be a soft s.

Can any one help me with a little French transcription? The underlined section is General Junot speaking to Colonel Murrary during negotiations about the Russian fleet in Lisbon, after the battle of Vimeiro.

Last night, we had to say goodbye to our wonderful Hope due to a sudden & severe illness. She was only 7, & we thought we’d have many happy years with her after her retirement from the Guide Dogs' breeding programme. She brought nearly 30 little life changers into the world and brought us much joy.

Another research purchase for my current WIP. It's always nice when a book arrives with an unexpected author signature, especially when it's a descendant of the maréchal! #history #spain #Napoleon

Publication day for @kabinettskriege.bsky.social's excellent Infantry in Battle! It's a great book that dispels many myths about 18th-century warfare. #history #militaryhistory #warfare

Not my usual period, but I really enjoyed editing this book. It's a cracking read. It should be out next month. www.helion.co.uk/military-his...

I'm editing increasing amounts of FWW and SWW titles, and they often make a nice change from the long 18th century.

It was great to start the week with a recommendation for Riflemen as part of the Society for Army Historical Research annual book lists: ‘an excellent piece of research but also an engaging narrative that makes for an enjoyable read without sacrificing depth,’ www.sahr.org.uk/view-book-li...

I've finished the Corunna section of the original German edition of Commissary Auguste Schaumann's memoirs. The English translator had omitted a few useful bits, mostly only descriptions of towns or landscapes. Schaumann's paintings of the campaign, though poorly printed, were an interesting bonus.
