So to the question of why go up to $10.3bn if your employees only want to sell $6.6bn, OpenAI wouldn't have known the employees only wanted to sell $6.6bn. The share price and maximum number of shares is settled with the buyers, and is then offered to the employees. It's not an active negotiation.

overvalue things we have in our possession. Some OpenAI employees probably do believe the company is worth more.

I have personally held onto shares I thought were overvalued because I thought probably the value would still go up before it crashes.

In a very basic sense if someone offers to buy a stock from you at $723, and you say no, that indicates you think the stock is worth more than $723.

The reality for the employees is more complicated. Most likely have way too much of their theoretical net worth in OpenAI stock. We tend to...

that's how much the buyers get. If employees had collectively submitted $15bn, then the employees do not get to sell all the shares they offered.

In short OpenAI did not try to sell $10.3bn and only sold $6.6bn. Investors tried to buy $10.3bn and employees only sold $6.6bn.

some amount, in this case 14.2 million shares, or $10.3bn.

Employees with stock then receive an email that says you can sell your stock for $723 per share. You have until a set date to let us know how many shares you want to sell.

Employees submitted a total of $6.6bn of shares to sell, so...

is not publicly traded, they can't just sell that stock whenever they want.

To allow employees to sell their stock, the company will go out and find funds that want to buy some of the company stock. OpenAI comes up with a stock price (in this case I think $723), and the fund offers to buy...

I think you may have an incomplete understanding of how these purchase offers work. I'm not an expert or lawyer or anything, but I've been through a bunch of them as an ex-employee of a not-publically-traded tech company.

Employees get part of their compensation as stock, but because the company...

It does seem unnecessary to brand wholesale amounts. My theory is they know the police and media won't be able to help themselves showing the weird corporate branding, and somehow that helps the sellers identify the confiscated drugs as theirs.

At least in the US car manufacturers have convinced people you have to buy a large pickup to tow anything, even though at this point they've made subcompacts large and powerful enough to tow a pretty decently sized trailer. My 2014 Hyundai Accent has no problem towing a 5x8 trailer.

It's especially unreasonable to be driving these every day because they aren't even that good at the hauling tasks. You can either rent a Transit from Home Depot and carry 12 foot lumber without it getting wet, or get a 5x8 foot trailer from UHaul and not have to worry about scratching your bed!

This is a more expensive version of a guy thinking his quick release steering wheel and fixed back eBay seats are going to increase the resale value of his Civic.

Same advice in both cases: Put it back to stock, sell the extra junk on Facebook marketplace for whatever you can get for it!

A Dyson sphere around Sam Altman however is very achievable with today's technology.

I've interacted with people who have everything they need to ride to get groceries and yet are unsure if they can do it because it's just been hammered into them that bikes are only for recreation.

But certainly many people in America do not have safe infrastructure to ride a bike anywhere useful!
August 15, 2025 at 7:09 PM
A person who has no trouble riding for hours, has a rear rack that can carry 150lbs, like yeah why wouldn't you be able to ride a couple miles to the grocery store and pick up 20 lbs of stuff?

For a lot of people it's just a completely foreign concept though!

Retired people who will load their bikes up in their SUVs, drive to a state park, and go riding for like 50+ miles loaded up with all sorts of clothes and supplies.

Like once a week youd get someone asking "hey this is kind of a crazy idea, but has anybody ever ridden to the grocery store?"
August 15, 2025 at 6:15 PM
The idea that bikes are just for recreation is so ingrained in people that even after buying and riding a bike they still have a hard time imagining using it for basic transportation.

We have a couple Lectric brand ebikes and I spent a little time on Facebook groups for them, which have a lot of...

There are a bunch of different alloys that get called stainless steel, some are more corrosion resistant than others.

It seems in line with other Tesla decisions to think they could get away with less corrosion resistance than is needed!

"CEO Elon Musk seems completely unbothered as he claims to believe that Tesla’s sales will surge back up in Europe once supervised self-driving is allowed."

Yeah good luck with that.

Also, does Elon seem unbothered? He's been seeming bothered this year.

I think it's the same trends everywhere (Tesla losing market share, while EVs gain market share). I think in Norway they are just currently really selling a lot of EVs.

What are the odds they can't sue the Tesla Diner because of an arbitration clause they signed when buying their Tesla?

I'm kind of excited for this. All the "I bought this before..." sticker folks now having options for NSFW and sexy voice, and probably still having it say Nazi shit even if they don't accidentally click those.
