Adding to my “to read” list. Sandweiss’ history that starts with this photograph lifts my heart. Historical photographs are wonderfully static and dynamic at the same time. They open the past to us in intimate and affective ways.

Photographs are historical artifacts; they are not history itself. History is dynamic, inherently about change over time. Photographs are static. They stop time dead still and focus our attention on what we can see. They suggest that what we see is somehow more important than what we can’t, that the moment fixed in the photographic image matters more than what happened just before or after. That is not always true.

It’s almost as if investing in people and recognizing the value of people in teaching and learning will make a bigger difference than the next tool or modality that comes along. AI is a poor ‘solution’ to increasing class sizes & labour precarity of instructors. We can’t use technology to fix this.

This is demanding work. It is hard. Most of us are exhausted most of the time. I find no fault with anyone hoping that our teaching loads become lighter and our paths to success easier. But it isn’t an A.I. textbook that’s going to solve the problem—it’s investment in human beings, at every kind of institution, at every level at which we educate and mentor and teach and learn. It’s better pay, and permanent positions, and childcare, and eldercare, and good healthcare, and professional development, and time.

I recognize that this is a hype/promo piece for Mollick’s course and this description of teaching makes me sad.

Being an expert in a field CAN be valuable and communicating knowledge IS important…

But these aren’t basic principles of teaching.

“Higher education is always in crisis, right? Teaching is always in crisis,” he notes. “We muddle through because some of the basic principles of teaching, which is, you know, experts in the field who care about communicating knowledge and (being) constructive—that piece is still there and still important and is going to stay that way.”
