As has been pointed out many times, most of the gains in fuel efficiency helping to reduce emissions have been wiped out by increasing sales of large and heavy SUVs. Would full electrification of vehicle fleet be necessary if most cars remained relatively small?

And have to admit to being sceptical about roll-out of high-speed rail in the early years and how well the new services would be used.

My recent experience of train travel in China is that as much use is made of intermediate stops, many joining and leaving at each station, as those making longer journeys. It is not all about people wanting to travel to the largest cities. Trains I took heavily used.

Have recently used many electric taxis in China...some drivers not positive regarding battery lives.

My understanding has been that export tax rebates offset implied VAT in price of exported goods. So attempt to level playing field rather than subsidy. Where rebates have been cancelled in other commodities significant exports only when price ex-China is 13% (current VAT) higher than domestic.
