Updating slides for today’s class and NASA is no longer updating their Vital Signs/Climate Change website. Last CO2 measurement is from June and it shows 230 ppm!

Keeling Curve has the latest reading at 424 ppm.

Is this not the perfect metaphor for the current state of the U.S.? Customers’ total disregard for anything that doesn’t impact them directly. Employees likely too underpaid and overworked to bother clean up the mess.

I was fortunate to have met Derek Briggs back in 2011 not too long after the Science paper describing the plumage color pattern of Anchiornis was published. I remember him having a framed original by Michael DiGiorgio in his office (which was also a figure in the publication).

We uncovered over 400 artifacts and geofacts, including a small quartz biface, a Quartz Levallois or discoidal flake, Tana Tradition (also known as Triangular-Incised Ware) pottery, and carnelian beads likely originating in Southeast Asia. 5/7

During our 2022 field season, we visited and surveyed 22 rockshelters and 6 open-air sites and collected 35 ecological baseline samples along 4 altitudinal transects across the East and West Usambara Mountains. 4/7

In 2022, we launched the Usambara Mountains Archaeology and Paleoecology Project (UMAPP) in Tanzania. With funding from the Max Planck Society, we set out to conduct the first systematic survey of Stone Age archaeology 🏺 in the region and collect baseline samples for paleo-proxy studies 🌍. 1/7

65 years ago today, Mary Leakey found OH 5 at Oldupai Gorge, Tanzania. A month later, the discovery was published in @nature.com as a new hominin, Zinjanthropus boisei (later reclassified as Paranthropus). Recent discoveries show that Paranthropus was likely a stone tool user.

My Eastern prickly-pear cactus (Opuntia humifusa) has been blooming this week! Eastern prickly-pear is New England's only native cactus, and it often surprises people that there even is a native cactus here. This is the first time mine has bloomed, but it’s been a big hit with local insects!
