Dad, Deputy Director RAS and Honorary Visiting Professor Sussex University. All views my own. Makes 'good' trouble.
From a couple of days ago. The town of #lewes #eastsussex shrouded in fog at dawn. #Venus and the #Moon above, ponies grazing below.

Busy yesterday as a guest on two episodes of Light Pollution News alongside Bill McGeeney, @designsgardens.bsky.social and Michael Calhoun. Then a talk @herstmonceuxobs.bsky.social last night, followed by clear skies!

A few days old now, but this was my DSLR image of the crescent Moon and the Pleiades. Absolutely beautiful, and a tonic for these difficult / farcical times.

And a brilliant animation from LAS member Paul Whitmarsh. The local society has 130 members and busy in person meetings - not bad for a town of 17,000.

Great to see the partial solar eclipse this morning. A local crowd of hundreds supported by Lewes Astronomical Society volunteers, and a solarscope borrowed from @royalastrosoc.bsky.social.

A beautiful evening at the Observatory Science Centre at Herstmonceux tonight to help launch National Astronomy Week for @royalastrosoc.bsky.social. See more at astronomyweek.org.uk

Wintry if in this case light polluted sky. I love the colours of the stars of Orion and its neighbouring constellations. Timely after a brilliant day @royalastrosoc discussing ALAN and a move for DAN.

And the cost in the US appears to be about seven times as high already. This is insane.

We'll see how this works out. In comparison here are the biologics I'm extremely grateful for via the NHS for Crohn's. Without these I might not be able to work, and the taxes I pay comfortably cover their costs. #crohns #nhs #Trump #healthcare

Attributed to James Callaghan. Certainly not the US right now. It seems we're determined to bequeath a terrible future to our children.

These shoes have coped with four months of c. 25-30km a week on quite rough ground. But I'm still annoyed that it's time to replace them, after one final cold stint this morning.

No comet, but the sunrise over #lewes was quite something. #eastsussex #Sussexlife #mist #dawn

Likely only temporary but even 5 cm of snow is enough to bring Sussex to a standstill. Just burned some calories shovelling and sweeping a stretch of pavement. #uksnow #lewes #Sussexlife #weather

#Moon & #Venus are in conjunction. Photos show the pair in the twilight sky, then shots from the same mobile held against the telescope eyepiece. The crescent Moon, short exposure for detail, longer for the earthshine, then Venus, here itself appearing like a tiny Moon. All from my garden in #Lewes
January 3, 2025 at 5:21 PM
Orion, dawn and a spotty Sun, all from or near #Lewes. Offsetting my cold nicely.
January 3, 2025 at 1:27 PM
Ignoring the bad channel, social media is still so useful. FB posts confirmed it's ok for me to inject Adulimubab for #Crohns despite having a cold. (What I thought but good to ask others.) And Venus and the Moon are out now too, they'll be really close in the sky tomorrow.

The #Geminids meteor shower peaks tonight but will be washed out by the light of the almost Full Moon. So why not enjoy that and Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn? Photos from above #Lewes and Pevensey Castle in East Sussex.

Beautiful and inspiring talk by artist @ioneparkin tonight at @royalastrosoc. An extraordinary mix of media, themes, colours and ideas, encompassing everything from moons in the solar system to the grandest scales of the universe.

Blustery out there today. #stormbert

Look at just how much light there is from the Full Moon. And then think about our need for constant artificial illumination, rather than embracing the dark too.

Here it is from my train over south London.

Whereas today was the GNOSIS conference and space sustainability. The tensions between wholesale development of Low Earth Orbit and the risks of cascading space debris, impacts on the upper atmosphere of the Earth, and serious damage to astronomy were as obvious as ever.

From last night. First clear sky for a while, so it was nice to even look at the Moon, and Cassini's "Moon Maiden". Look carefully at the bottom.

In the midst of troubling times, this made me laugh a lot. Don't have Disney+ though! www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio...
