Boss passed away in 1916 and is buried with his wife, Maria, in the Spring Forest Cemetery.

Works by Boss collected dust in living rooms, attics, and antique stores around Binghamton for almost a century before Roberson Museum curators put together the first solo exhibition of his work in 1972.

Though he never saw true commercial success, he was a favorite of Binghamton businessman Alonzo Roberson:

"I am no critic, but I know when I like something. And Henry Wolcott Boss, the painter, is one of my favorites."

Boss was even hired to paint a portrait of Alonzo's prized bird dog.

Though no one knows for sure how Boss learned the techniques of the Hudson River School of Painting, interviews with relatives revealed that he was friends with D&H Railway crewmen, and likely hitched free rides to travel NYS and practice painting with students of the Hudson River School.

"Beaded Birds in Haudenosaunee Art" is on view at Roberson Museum through September 28th, featuring more than 100 works created by dozens of Haudenosaunee artisans, from the collection of retired archaeologist Dolores Elliott.

Though a number of complete sets can be found in various collections around the world, most of the etchings were broken up and sold individually.

This piece, from Roberson’s Collection, is currently on view in the second floor Wurtz Gallery.

More than 300 sets were produced by printmaker Atelier Lacourière-Frélaut from Picasso’s completion of the suite in 1937 to 1939. However, these etchings didn’t hit the art market until the 50s due to the death of Vollard and WWII.
