In summary (#tldr):

Study in @natureportfolio.bsky.social Nature Medicine reveals potential deadly effect of large floods on injuries, infectious diseases, other causes. Our study shows sweeping and hidden effects of floods such as those due to tropical cyclones, heavy rain, snowmelt, or ice jams.

What’s the relevance for the future?

In the United States, population growth alone is projected to result in ~72 percent increase in the population exposed to floods annually by 2050, before accounting for climate change in leading to more frequent floods (cf @ipcc.bsky.social ):

What were the health impacts?

Over the last 20 years, large floods were associated with up to 24.9 percent higher death rates from major mortality causes in the U.S. compared to normal conditions:

What was flooding exposure?

Residents of 2,711 counties, covering >75 percent of the population, experienced at least one large flood. Heavy rain was most common cause of large flood events with the next most due to snowmelt in Midwest and tropical cyclones in southeast:

What did we do?

Here, we collected 35.6 million deaths and validated flood exposure to comprehensively examine the association of large floods with death rates for six major causes of death over an 18-year period (2001–2018) at the county level across the United States:

Fascinating talk hosted by the Columbia Global Center and @adamtooze.bsky.social about the international view of US elections. As discussed, many won’t understand or want to hear this, but a lot of people worldwide are actually happy with the result, v disappointed w/ the outgoing administration:
