I like how Gail Jones writes about the weirdness of hotels
Cover of Gail Jones's novel One Another (2024) It was an old building, but renovated in the seventies. Unlike many in Cambridge, this was not a hotel of English froufrou, rose-patterned curtains and a pink satin cushion (inevitably circular) placed in the centre of the bed; it was functional and plain. There, replacing the sheets, wiping the surfaces, removing the muck in the bathroom, she joined the collective workers that Justin had analysed with graphs as he mocked their ‘decline’ and ‘lumpen primitivism’. Mostly the labour was soothing: she entered what she thought of as cleaner’s consciousness, the flattened motions like meditation, the mandated order, the routine of the cleaning liquids and their various squirting applications. As she walked into each sour room, seeking human spots and detritus, she felt a comforting denudation. In her anonymous beige uniform she was flat and featureless and tasked exactly. She allotted a set time to each clean and there was a method and rhythm to the chores. She became accustomed to the humid quality of the rooms, to their dreary resonance, to the sense that the departed had always left something behind, like the vibrations of stomping on stairs felt at a lower level. Aura and trace, she thought. That which transmits; that which remains. Indispensable concepts. It was her job to restore the blandness new patrons expect. To remove the vaporous and unaccountable, the random disorder, the human-like tremors—a soft breathing or a soft treading—of other hotel lives.
