A civil engineer in Edinburgh. Cycle path closures and a bit of history.
That is what the 2010 application describes. New fence is a continuation of tihs.

Beware large area of broken asphalt around manhole on Princes Street westbound at The Mound following last nights water main issue. #EdTravCyc

Heras fencing is typically used to keep users away from exposed embankments. Example from coatbridge viaduct works 2020

If you can get to Inverleith Park, quietroute 20 may be a better option. Otherwise, there are few safe alternatives.

Ferry Road Path CLOSED to pedestrians and cyclists from today to 16 January for installation of a security fence at Leonardo. TTRO closure order was signed on Wednesday with the below diversion: www.edinburgh.gov.uk/downloads/fi... #EdTravCyc @spokes.org.uk @edi.bike

Also looking for guidance on this. I've seen a draft 'factsheet' from a local authority quoting a 1.5m gap for cycles is reduced to 1.2m for HVM, but no source or further advice on height/visibility. In Edinburgh and Manchester the Surface Guard barriers have been used for active travel permeability

If the Beltane Fire Festival can do it, why not CEC?

In the closure last week it had permeable traffic cones. Could be blocked when works are taking place however. Closure will return Thurs/Fri. www.threads.com/@edinburghtr...

Rodney Street closed citybound including uphill segregated cycle lane. Eyre Pl and George IV park may offer alternate route. #EdTravCyc @edi.bike www.threads.com/@edinburghtr...

Enjoying the new VOI bike expansion today, and I'm not the only one.

However, high winds today seem to be knocking bikes over.
I saw a kind passer-by standing some up at Fountainbridge, only for them to blow over again. Curiously, the bikes then disappeared from the app.

It's a wonder footways were not extended when the parking was restricted in the 90s. The footways were overcrowded even when the bridge first opened..

Are the bus lanes not being put back?

But this is fine every Christmas

Ah, the classic yellow 'advisory' dismount sign. It's amazing that we're still seeing these 26 years after the DoT specifically said not to use them (TAL15/99)

I went to this and sat in a bus to see blind spots. The Lothian buses officer said "cyclists put themselves in dangerous positions" and "take gambles". We then had a good discussion on LB drivers ignoring bike boxes, such as raised by @spokes.org.uk at Waverley Bridge @shellieshellie.bsky.social

Spontaneous cycling lessons after a road resurfacing closure last night. If only it was always like this? @edi.bike @violaoutside.bsky.social @blackfordsaferoutes.co.uk

Works have extended north today and closed the path by the sports fields. This means there is no step-free diversion possible and dismounting is necessary. #EdTravCyc

2007 proposals included a new engineered embankment, presumably now omitted in favour of retaining existing ecology. Topology is very steep with around a 1 in 1.5 slope (66%!)
August 27, 2025 at 1:16 PM
The 2007 planning application included a cycleway over the bridge, connecting to Balbirnie Pl and Russel Rd similar to what we have now.

The artists impressions show cycleway stopping at CCWEL on A8 and diverted via Russel Rd.

Union Path closures 9am-5pm daily until next Wednesday 3rd September. They'll be moving southwards generally, so hopefully cycle access should be possible by Harrison Park in later stages. It should be a manned closure. www.scottishcanals.co.uk/boating/ongo... #EdTravCyc @edi.bike @spokes.org.uk

Here's some quick travel advice for Murrayfield ACDC:
Snip of public cycle parking below.
Note a section of the WoL path is closed from today, with a diversion on Baird Dr.
Road closures on Roseberry Crescent and Harmarket Terrace run by CCWEL, so you may need to go around barriers to access it.

In late 1956, the final trams were removed. Asphalt replaced setts on Princes Street, ripping up the tram rails in the process. The space became dominated by bus and motorcar. [4/4]

Edinburgh's streets had become a contested space, with a growing motor car lobby blaming pedestrians and calling for the removal of the tram network.
