Beautiful atonal harmonies from Trio Mandili @LuxorArnhem. Three young women from Georgia (the country, not the US state) with only some sparse instrumentation. Lovely banter in between songs, but the three-part singing did it. Kudos for Lais’ ‘t Smidje (in Dutch and Georgian) towards the end!

Zoek Rob. #PorcupineTree #ZiggoDome (helaas alweer ruim 3 jaar geleden, maar beeldrijm)

Another excellent gig from Luka Bloom tonight @StevenskerkNijmegen! Told us he’d had open heart surgery and how it had affected him and his playing. Beautiful instrumentals followed but more oldies towards the end. His voice is still very strong and his guitar playing better than ever I think. Thnx

Hmm, overtones of the early 80s: “she promised to follow him until the end of the earth — he promised to organise it”

Well, that escalated quickly … heks mag wel maar feeks niet?

Why is it impossible to get a nice Belgian (or otherwise high-fermentation) beer at a major international airport hub like Schiphol? Brand IPA is decent but, come on, a Tripel Karmeliet should at least be available somewhere with a two-hour delay?

Proficiat Paulien! Wel beetje pijnlijk dat nb het CPNB je daar beneden als een soort verpleegster neerzet (“… weet de lezer te verbinden.”) @cpnb.nl #cpnb

As predicted by Dead Kennedys 45 years ago … Reagan feels like Mahatma fvckin Gandhi by now

OK dus degene die oorlogsmisdaden wereldkundig maakt wordt daarvoor gestraft, Israël is weer lekker bezig. En wij blijven zo’n regering steunen?!

Here’s what’s really going on, as predicted by The Dead Kennedys 45 years ago (then under Reagan):

Excellent performance from Johnny Marr @TivoliVredenburgUtrecht tonight! The man writes great tunes and their delivery, especially with his 1-in-a-million guitar sound, was wonderful. Never got to see The Smiths live, but this was closer than anything ever. Panic, Bigmouth, How Soon, Light, Please!

Irish band The Clockworks opened for Johnny Marr @TivoliVredenburgUtrecht just now. Pretty good up-tempo songs, three-part harmonies, playful overall, well done

My penultimate Claw Boys Claw show (no. 29 since 1986) was a joy as ever. Will probably shed a few tears in Paradiso in december, as this is their farewell tour. Lots of (wanted an unwanted) female support on stage, and a mosh pit that grew by each song. Not bad for a 76-year old ex-choir boy!

My first time seeing Powaqqatsi played live @TivoliVredenburgUtrecht by the Philip Glass Ensemble, after two excellent Koyaanisqatsi’s. Magnificent is the best summary

Sigur Rós did a very special performance with the Noordpool Orchestra @CarréAmsterdam tonight. It worked beautifully for two full hours. Very different from when I saw them at Paradiso ages ago, but then I guess that was the point. Jonsi’s voice was still very powerful #sigurros #noordpoolorkest

Nice dual afternoon performance from Ken Stringfellow & Astrid Young @ThiemeloodsNijmegen! Ken (ex-Posies/Big Star/REM) was very talkative and brought his delicate songs with passion. Astrid (Neil Young’s half-sister) was louder in her songs but had equally beautiful tunes. Played a few joint songs!

Saw Throwing Muses for the 1st time in 37 years (ahem) @EffenaarEindhoven (outplaying Pixies at the time!). Kristin Hersh’s sandpaper voice fits the band much better than when I saw her solo in Amsterdam last year. Her unusual songs still worked — pity that the cello player remained mostly unheard

Pretty devastating noise from Mogwai @DoornroosjeNijmegen tonight. Saw them in Eindhoven some 10 or 15 years ago and this was at least as brutal as that. Great light show for support too

Kathryn Joseph opened for Mogwai @DoornroosjeNijmegen and was quite mesmerizing, even though she sang mostly about fvcking. Backed up only by (what sounded like) 80s synths & with a voice veering occasionally towards Buffy St Marie, she was hard to compare (Anne Clark covering Lana del Rey?). Nice!

Excellent nostalgia show from The Gathering fronted by the one and only Anneke van Giersbergen @DoornroosjeNijmegen! Playing Mandylion and assorted other songs, the band was in great shape. Anneke’s singing was just out of this world, incredible
