Prior to recent-ish times it was because phones on the Japanese market commonly had the ability to share information via IR. It persisted into the smartphone era. Nowadays its the same purpose but via NFC. Both kinda necessitate holding the devices close to each other

I've had one since June, been using it as my main controller, and it has been excellent. Most recently - zero issues through 70hrs of Silksong, no input delay, not dropped inputs. insane value for a controller.
