A Tumblr post from everythingismadeofchaos 5h ago Revisiting the same video months and months later, it occurs to me that yes, this is shameful and mean spirited, but we have an opportunity here. We can just start referring to things this way. Everybody knows Watson and Crick discovered the structure of DNA. But from now on, we can just say Franklin, Watson, and Crick discovered the structure of DNA, and if people disagree you can inform them, and if they still disagree you can have an argument and make fun of their ignorance. It would take a long time and probably involve just a lot of people dying off but we can repair this if we do it intentionally. If we all internalize this idea and start doing it consciously and spreading the idea around, it will eventually take hold. And then when some kid whose parents emigrated to the United States from the Arabic world is sitting there learning math they've got something to be proud of, something they're connected to, and they lose something to resent. I'm going to try to do this. I think we have to get the science popularizers on board. Maybe we can convince Hank Green

Sure, but let's not forget that having a correct visa and all the legal paperwork will not stop you from being arrested by ICE for no good reason. The legal technical term is "without probable cause"

I love Sarah Paine's little heuristic she figured out for determining what books to read in history in just a few seconds. She doesn't claim it's a universal, just a good indication. Look at the bibliography. If none of it consists of language sources that correspond with the source material, for example the Chinese languages in a history of China, then the book probably isn't worth much of a reed. If you're going to study a culture that deeply and understand what's going on you need to speak the language and read the original literature and understand on a closer level

There's a whole mentality shift that needs to happen culture wide here, from the schools to the public infrastructure to pet ownership to the justice system The proper response to your dog doing a natural behavior you dislike (digging/ barking/protecting etc) it to give them an appropriate time and place to engage in that behavior The proper response to skateboarders damaging infrastructure is to build more and better skate parks, or build skate elements into the public infrastructure on purpose. The proper response to homeless people sleeping on park benches is is to build them houses. you see how there's like, a commonality at play here? The proper response to a disruption is to address the root of the disruption directly, not somehow attack the disruption itself - you don't invent a muffler by swinging a bat at the engine noise, you don't relieve your hunger by punching yourself in the stomach, you don't resolve public unrest by sending armed men to control them and you don't prevent homeless people using bus shelters as a roof by removing the bus shelters. a whole ass shift in a basic mindset, i'm tellin' you. We need it. And it's possible. We used to move in that direction. In this country in the 1960s we had a program to build enough housing to turn the deficit into a surplus, for example. We pretty much just have to fuck Ronald Reagan's corpse hard enough to disintegrate his ideas about upward wealth redistribution and stop them poisoning the ruling elite around the world. 62.3K notes

A Tumblr post from whatacartouchebag 6d ago Follow 91% Crawling out of my hole to remind people that with this current update to Firefox (version 144) they've gone and dumped in their lot with a buncha lil Al tools, namely Perplexity as a new search engine. So if the sound of that leaves your mouth tasting of tar, here's what you want to do: In the url bar, type in about:config It'll give you a big scary warning page that you might poke holes in your browser. Good. You want to do that. Click continue. One by one, you're going to need to put each of these into the search bar in the page, not up top: browser.ml.enable browser.ml.chat.enabled extensions.ml.enabled browser.ml.linkPreview.enabled browser.tabs.groups.smart.enabled browser.tabs.groups.smart.userEnabled Each of these are gonna have a lil toggle icon on the right hand side that looks like a funky double-ended arrow. Click that and the value next to it should change to false. It all auto saves as you go. Some of these might already be set to false by default and that's peachy. The next best thing you can do for yourself is to set your default search engine to udm14 or Qwant, but for now, we're just tidying the garden a lil bit
