Off on a perpetual road trip in our DIY renovated 1970 Avion C11. Camping, hiking, overlanding, XC mountain biking, rafting, trail running & anything else that gets us outside.
Building proceeds in stutters and starts.

Doing this "right" takes time, and rather than rushing the renovation of our little home on wheels or delaying our adventures until everything is "perfect", we've taken it in stages.

Chris: "Wow, the truck is so dirty.”

Lexi: "How did it get this dirty?"

*Pause to tally up all the dirt roads we have driven since last washing the truck**

Both: "Oh, right..."

To those who draw back in horror and insist, "Oh, I could never do that!"

Yes, you can. You aren't some unique offshoot of the human genome incapable of living outside and following the seasons. Humanity has done it for ages.

Is it hard?
Sure!

It's been a minute!

We've been overwhelmed training for yet another race (our biggest yet!) The outcome was one crazy surprise.

More details to come!

Last year, we spent over two weeks at altitude.

It's fascinating to experience the body going through change. Camping at 10,000 ft started out as a struggle. We couldn't do much more than walk around the campground and make our meals without being winded.

Someone out there, please. If I ever talk about signing up for an ultra in the early fall, stop me.

I learned my lesson last year with a summer ultra but here we are, doing back to back long runs for a 100 miler at the end of August. #longrun #UltraRunner #Running

I’m still nursing an injured foot, but I can't help myself. I suppose you could accuse Chris of being an enabler because he ran every mile with me.

When we crossed the finish line, hand in hand, Chris is 4th for men, and I am 2nd for women. We both earned our finishers' belt buckles.

Night Howler 50, is a trail race where that is pretty much all we do. The course is a 2.5-mile loop course in Hoover, Alabama, at the end of June. We line up in a sports complex, surrounded by baseball diamonds and risers. At 8pm, the sun begins to set, & we begin our first lap of 20.

Night Howler 50 was supposed to be a test.

Chris and I will run our first 100-miler this fall. While we have run mountains, long distances, and trails, one of the major challenges of a 100-miler (if you aren’t a professional who can run 100 miles in 14 hours) is running through the night.

Here are a couple of young chipmunks because they are adorable.

That is all.

Sorry for the radio silence, but we've been in the middle of a big ol' migration on the internets.

After a decade of the same clunky website, we've given it a fresh coat of paint and hopefully a much faster page load so you don't spend a full minute waiting for a map.

It's sweltering outside, so it's time for another race, right?

This Saturday, we are participating in the Night Howler 50: a 50-mile overnight race.

It will get dark.
We may be delirious.
And, despite the predicted heat, there may be thunderstorms.

Jeep trails: the magical intersection between trail running and overlanding.

Some days, we find our next campsite by going out for a run.

We turned around and found a trail that was less likely to kill us.

Today, we are equally disinterested in murderous routes. At least we have trail running poles.

So when we encounter this particular ice sheet with a lower threat of impending doom, we tackle it with only minor slippage.

We’re not the type to live on the edge. If we see a dangerous situation, we’ll avoid it. But often, what makes a situation dangerous is the gear, or lack thereof.

Back in our early, pre-Avion, days of travel, we visited Olympic National Park. I found an amazing alpine hiking loop.

Is your garden full of zucchini?

May I suggest zucchini brownies?

Every year brings a new adventure.

Sometimes it's wild, sometimes it's weird, and sometimes... it's unexpectedly adorable.

We stumbled upon a couple of dehydrated, lethargic baby squirrels—so desperate they’d climbed out of their nest and lay sprawled in the open.

Filter fail:

Look, of course this is my fault. I should have tested the filter before we started our 20 mile run.

That said, at least I had the presence of mind to refill a bottle before we drank all our water.

Point being: there was no throughput.

Today marks a month since I injured my foot. Recovery has been a dance of two steps forward, one step back. I feel like I'm progressing, but as we swing into summer, it's hard not to cut loose and dive into all the adventures I'm used to.
