but it strikes me as ironic because not only are "AI" and markets not inherently good at solving problems and bad at solving many (most? idk), the idea that they specifically solve "knowledge problems" is extra wrong with "AI" when it famously has a "black box problem"

There is a famous mantra from the movie Field of Dreams: "If you build it, they will come." This applies very well to the punishment bureaucracy. It is not the solution to what ails the human spirit, our collective society, or the desperate planet. Never let anyone scare you into forgetting that.
